Cultural Day – Parent Helpers Needed
We have had no offer of help, for Room 14, for our upcoming Cultural Day so I am out my request again. If you have any interest or are available that day please give this some consideration and contact me.
Gladstone will be having a Cultural Day and Exhibition of Learning on Wednesday the 27th of September. The children will be displaying their New Zealand Water Systems and Marine Environment learning that we are now working on for Topic. We need to have one or more parents come in to share and teach the children something about their culture. We could make food, learn a song/dance/game, undertake an art project, any ideas will be considered! Please drop me a line or pop in to see me if you would be interested in taking part – we would love to have your involvement and the chance to learn more about the wonderful cultures that make up Room 14.
Kia ora everyone,
Long Bay Trip
Thank you to everyone who has returned permission slips for our class trip to Long Bay on Tuesday 29th of August. The deadline for this was last week so please get your trip forms in asap if you haven’t done so. Thank you to all parents who have offered to help out on this trip I will be in contact. Its not too late to contact me if you would like to come. We will be going by bus. The trip is an action-packed day investigating how people affect coastal environments and streams. Through hands-on learning we explore the waterways of Long Bay. Meet the animals living in Long Bay streams and learn how they are affected by changes to their environment. Students then observe examples of human impacts on waterways and identify potential pollution sources. They will learn how their own actions can help preserve the health of our streams.
We started our speeches last Friday and will continue this week. The children and I really enjoyed listening to the speeches and I was so proud of all of the children who presented their speech last Friday. They all did a fantastic job!!
New Exercise Books
A reminder that some of the children need new exercise books because they have filled up their old ones, particularly in Maths and Writing. Please be proactive and ask your child if they need any new exercise books. This weekend would be a good time to get new ones. Some of the children have been working on photocopied pages for some time and they are not keeping a good record of learning.
Later this week I want to send out some photos of our trips and learning on the blog. Please let me know if you don’t want me to include any photos of your child.
Thanks have a great week!
what a fantastic afternoon we had today planting trees for Friends of Oakley Creek. The children all planted one native tree each and they did a great job. It is so rewarding to see the children involved in a local community activity and doing something positive for our environment. Thank you to all the parents who came along too and lent a helping hand, we couldn’t do it without you.
This brings me to my next request, I need parent helpers for another trip, this time a day trip, to Long Bay on Tuesday 29th of August. We will be going by bus. Oakley Creek Trip
On Monday afternoon we have our trip to Oakley Creek, leaving school at lunchtime and returning for the 3.00 pm end of the school day. Thank you to all the parents who have contacted me and said they can help. If you would like to join us, you still can, just send me an email before Monday. Some of the children have told me verbally their parents are coming, so if this is you please email me firstname.lastname@example.org to confirm. We will meet in Room 14 at 1.05 for a 1.15 departure. All the children and parent helpers need covered- in sturdy shoes (gumboots are ideal) and gardening gloves to protect their hands. It should be a great outing where the children feel they have helped out in our community in a positive way.

Hi everyone. Hope that you have enjoyed the sunshine this weekend even though it was a little chilly.
Oakley Creek Trip – Parent Helpers Needed
Next Monday the 7th of August we have a trip to Oakley Creek as part of our Science Topic, where we are investigating pollution in our waterways and how this impacts negatively on our marine environments. As part of this topic we wanted to take some positive action in our local environment and an opportunity has arisen for us to help The Friends of Oakley Creek plant some trees and do some mulching. We will be leaving school at 1.15 pm and estimated time of arrival back at school is 2.50 pm. For this trip to go ahead I need parent helpers so please email me if you can help on Monday for a couple of hours. I know its short notice but it would be great to be involved in a community project such as this. We also need gardening gloves, the school has a supply of gloves but not enough for all of us, so if you have gloves at home can the children bring them in asap and any spares. This trip is covered by the 5 km permission slip you signed at the beginning of the year.

Welcome back to Term 3,
We have an exciting term ahead of us, including learning experiences linked to Science and how we can better protect our Marine Environments. This topic was chosen by the children last term.
Plays -The children this week have been reading plays and they are going to perform them in front of the class on Friday afternoon. They may ask you for some simple props or costumes from home.
Camp notices – these were sent home last term, thank you to those who have filled in the form and returned it. We don’t need any payment as yet – just the form. The children would like to win the prize for having all the forms returned first so please support them and return the forms even if the children are not attending camp next year.

Just a reminder that it is our trip to Corban Estate Arts Centre tomorrow. They need to bring their brain snack, morning tea, lunch and a drink bottle in their school bag as normal. We are aiming for a 1.20 pm return. Thanks for all the parents who are providing transport and I trust you received your information letter last week from your son/daughter. It is going to be a great trip where the children will be making their own kite.

School finishes on Friday, for the two week term holidays, at the usual 3.00 pm time.
There is no homework this week.
Have a safe and enjoyable time with your children, and I will see you all next term.
We were awarded the Environment Shield last Friday at Whole School Assembly, for our fantastic and interesting classroom environment. The class and I were very happy to receive this award. It was great to have the children’s writing, reading, maths and art work, which they have displayed in the classroom, recognised by the school.

As part of our poetry writing we have been exploring what it means to be a Kiwi/New Zealander. We are making hanging mobiles to display our New Zealand poems. These will include our poems and kiwiana objects. We started these last Friday and will continue to work on them over the week. All children need to bring in materials to make their mobile such as kiwiana objects, wool, string, fishing line, strong sticks, bamboo. If you have extra of any of these please bring them in as we are sharing when needed.
Cross country is this Friday and will be held over at UNITEC this year. We will be going over to UNITEC after school assembly so please ensure your child is dressed appropriately with running gear. You are all welcome to come and watch the event. 9 year olds will start at 11.10 and 10 year olds 11.40.
My first three weeks in Rm 14 have flown by and that is due to your children being so welcoming to me as their new teacher and being so positive and enthusiastic about their learning. Please contact me at anytime if you want to find out more about what we are doing in the classroom or any aspect of your child’s learning or well-being at school.
